What began as a memo… on an order form has developed into the slogan for the most headstrong Belgian brand of spectacles: ’theo loves you’. To this very day the motto connects everything theo does, every decision, every collection. It was the love for their clients that made Wim Somers and Patrick Hoet, opticians with their own store, decide to design and present a collection under the name of theo. Why? Well, simple: because they wanted to offer their clients something other than the mainstream glasses that were selling at the time. So, in 1989, the first theo glasses became a fact. And they were groundbreaking. With every following collection, it became increasingly easier to reach the consumer. Today, more than 20 years later, theo is sold in 1,400 stores across 50 countries… and theo loves them all!
Originally theo only addressed the avant-garde. Later however, the glasses began to appeal to a wider audience. But theo always had a soft spot for the individualist. So in order to generate interest among trendsetters again, ‘Eye-witness’ was launched in May 1995. These spectacles were apparently unfinished and asymmetrical. Eye-witness wearers are often men and women who are kindred spirits. The Eye-witness line still exists today and every year new models are launched.
In 2004, theo announced its co-operation with the German-Belgian designer Christoph Broich. This cross-pollination between fashion and eyewear proved a hit. The sunglasses Broich and theo were recognisable by the safety pin in the spring. Four years later, theo started collaborating with Belgian designer Tim Van Steenbergen on its new collection of sunglasses. The two Antwerp labels joined forces and have since been producing spectacles that radiate glamour and sophistication. In 2012, theo & Tim presented their forth collection together. And they are working hard on the next one.
To celebrate its 20th birthday, theo presented the ‘VinGtage’ collection at Mido 2007. theo is famous for its small glasses, of course, making this ‘Vingtage’ collection (vingt ans d’age! = 20 years in French – one of Belgium’s official languages) quite a departure. The focus has definitely shifted from the eyes to the face. Yet these glasses are in no way similar to what people wore some forty years ago – these are spectacles for the present times, and indeed spectacular.
theo like to be unpredictable. For a new optical collection in 2010, theo started working with James Van Vossel, a creative spirit who was given carte blanche, resulting in a series with no equivalent. More models to come!
The theo headquarters are located in Antwerp. Mik and Toon, two of the three sons of Big Boss Wim Somers, joined the business a few years ago. Third son Jan joined his mother Jamme at the theo – Somers Optiek store. Nowadays, more than thirty people work for theo in Europe, the US and Japan. So this small family business has developed into a major player in the international optics market. Patrick Hoet sold his shares to Wim about 15 years ago. Nevertheless Patrick stays exclusive designer for theo. Meanwhile theo has its own design team that works together closely with Patrick.
And so, theo keeps on surprising!

Step 3: Choice of fabrics & accessories
After measuring your measurements, we will discuss the possible fabrics, the color of the lining and all the options with you. The tailor will give you professional advice on all possible finishes.
Step 4: Delivery of Creation
Depending on the complexity, your tailor-made suit, jacket, shirt, trousers or other multi-piece creation will be ready after a few weeks. The tailor checks with you whether everything feels comfortable.

Our Story
Belgian designer Alexandra Jacmin and her entrepreneur twin sister Ségolène Jacmin established their eco-conscious label FAÇON JACMIN in 2016. After graduating from La Cambre, Alexandra worked for Maison Martin Margiela and Jean-Paul Gaultier. The duo has since carved out a unique position amongst Belgium’s most innovative emerging talents.
FAÇON JACMIN is an attitude. With their label, the twins aime to give women more confidence and empower them in their everyday life, helping to express themselves to the fullest.
Alexandra’s designs explore the codes of seduction, and the alliance of masculinity and femininity. If denim remains her field of predilection, other fabrics are intertwined with it, to present a playful silhouette, meddling boldness and charm – a vision for an eco-conscious, modern, desirable, and determined woman.
Next to the main collections, capsule collections made of up-cycled designs are crafted by hand in our atelier in Antwerp and revealed once a year.
FAÇON JACMIN was awarded “Best Talent 2016” by C’est du Belge/RTBF, and a year later, in 2017 an award for “Best Emerging Talent” at the Belgian Fashion Awards.
A Japanese love story
FAÇON JACMIN has a certain affinity for denim, and more particularly for Japanese denim, giving the clothes finesse and durability. Japan, renowned globally for producing the best denim, has managed to preserve their traditional, artisanal craft creating an affinity to authenticity.
The natural indigo, a dye that is among one of the oldest, gives the pieces a rich colour, as well as a rich history. Natural indigo is still used in Japan, resulting in deep blues and improved wear resistance. They work with traditional machines that create a tighter weaving pattern improving resilience, while offering strength and delicateness at the same time. Japanese denim, supported by the culture of perfectionism, has a premium and distinctive composition that has become the nation’s pride, leaving a mark in Japanese modern history – a history that is a true mix of tradition and innovation.
Since the beginning of FAÇON JACMIN, the twins have been influenced and passionate about embracing Japan and its rich culture.

THE FASHION DEPARTMENT
The Fashion Department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts was founded in 1963. In the early years, the academy mainly focused on fine arts but under the guidance of Mary Prijot and Marthe Van Leemput, it quickly grew into a full-fledged fashion education. Two important milestones have changed fashion history forever. First, the rise of the Antwerp Six, all alumni of the Antwerp Fashion Department. The Six — along with Martin Margiela — were a quirky group of designers: they made a name for themselves in the early 1980s with their contrarian views on fashion, averse to what the commercial fashion dictated and limited. Their international success and reputation was the culmination of the vision and the approach of the Fashion Department, which gained international fame and recognition. Second, from 1985, the Fashion Department entered a new era under the leadership of Linda Loppa. She put the emphasis on not only a greater individual expression of the students but also on international orientation, and especially on boundless conceptual creativity. Thanks to her, the conceptual and experimental education was emphasized. Since 2006, and until today, the Fashion Department of Antwerp continues to produce countless of talented conceptual designers under the guidance of Walter Van Beirendonck, one of the members of the Antwerp Six.
THE BODY | Without the body, there is no fashion. Fashion exists because of it. Through drawing, the students are finding a way for the body to relate to the surrounding reality. That is still the foundation of their education. Otherwise, the experimental idea is purely an artistic matter. The result must have a valid function within fashion but not necessarily a product value. This makes the education at the Antwerp Fashion Department different from other fashion schools that adhere to commercial designs. However, reality is always in the back of the education’s mind. The teachers are or were employed in any branch of the fashion industry. They want to share their experiences. Workshops and theme projects help prepare the students to different aspects of the business.
THE EXPERIMENT | Being able to think and work unlimitedly experimentally is the most treasured part of this education. Students get the opportunities to push their creative boundaries. Moreover, through an intensive personal guidance by the team of teachers, they are continuously driven to push their limits. That way they are be able to maximize their abilities, ideas and imaginations. The Antwerp Fashion Department will continue to focus on creativity because wanting and daring to think in an unrestrained manner is the most powerful tool for a world in constant change.
THE PLACE | Due to MoMu Antwerp Fashion Museum‘s current renovations -and highly anticipated 2020 reopening-, which touches the building at Nationalestraat 28 housing the Fashion Department, the department will find a temporary haven inside the historical Antwerp landmark Handelsmuseum at the Coquilhatstraat, as of June 2018. Handelsmuseum formerly lodged the Department of Translators and Interpreters and is noted for its monumental neo-baroque façade. Closely located to the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Handelsmuseum is equipped to accommodate the students of the Fashion Department for two academic terms.
THE FREEDOM | The goal is not the extensive study of materials, nor the study of both traditional and innovative techniques. They are merely tools for the students, enabling them to think freely and experiment. Tradition, craftsmanship and innovation are key. Being able to create individually and freely is very important. The program offers the students all possibilities, but imposes nothing. Freedom of choice is the basis of innovative creativity. The evolution towards one’s own signature is based on freedom of choice, but also on content, on craft knowledge, and on the quality of the results. The indi vidual In the four-year program, the evolution of the students is closely followed by the teachers. It is a vertical guidance throughout the years. The development of each individual starts with uncovering their knowledge, their interests and their personality. This basis stimulates their inner environment. The process is incredibly intense, not only for the teachers but also the students, and therefore very productive. It enables students to develop a flexible and positive attitude, and a real passion for their work. The constant reflection on their abilities not only molds them into talented designers, but also develops strong personalities.
